Backing the Horse

Alanna has been backing and re-backing horses for many years, some young, some old, some with problems, many in cooperation with other professionals and many on her own for a wide range of disciplines. Alanna is a small lightweight rider therefore can ride most equines being cautious of their fitness and strength levels before mounting. Welfare is a huge part of what Alanna practices therefore all considerations of the horse and their behaviour towards certain task is always listened to. It was Alanna's racing background that has given her the most opportunity to back horses, so live wire types are no issue. She is a true sympathetic horsewoman using the art of listening to the horse. She uses a unique method of connection to ensure safe and positive results throughout training which can be easily transitioned to any situation or person. Using calm, simplistic steps, she believes anything can be achieved with any horse, patience for the individual is key. Each session is tailored to each equine and owner, working with their personal learning processes and catering to the requirements expected. This can be a mobile service or please inquire for livery spaces. My goal is to create unique partnerships between the horse and rider/owner, so you have the choice to be as little or as much involved as you feel.

Behavioural Issues

No issue is too big or too small. Alanna has extensive experience in understanding and helping misunderstood horses, many of the time being in an uncontrolled environment. Alanna truly believes no horse is naughty, but some can become aggressive through over stimulation or mis-behave due to underlying pain or learnt behaviour. All of these issues can be solved with the correct training and time, each horse is assessed accordingly and is given a tailored behavioural shaping plan.

Ground training, ground work, ground rules. Training on the ground is a vital process for your horse to learn something new and adjust any issues. Watt Equine provides anything from teaching the horse to be caught calmly, basic manners and exercising to help establish better muscle balance. Ground work can be used in many ways and it is beneficial for both horse and owner as a partnership, all ground training techniques can be taught to you as an owner. This training can be used for any horse including rehab. Our aim with ground work is to establish boundaries and safety for human and horse whilst creating a trustworthy connection.

Equine Podiatry

Alanna has been trimming barefoot horses for 7 years + and began training with Equine Podiatry Training to become an professional member of the Equine Podiatry Association. The training concludes a Level 5 Lantra Equine Podiatry Diploma which involves an extensive course relating to the hoof, welfare, environment, nutrition and much more. To date, Alanna has had the opportunity to observe many different hoofcare practitioners and follow their work, having been at university previously, Alanna has been lucky enough to dissect and inspect the whole horse including the hoof many times. She has a full understanding of anatomy and biomechanics of the horse, including the distal limb and the hoof. Each hoofcare visit will include a gait analysis, nutrition analysis, management analysis, a full report form and all the advice available to offer. Due to Alanna's calm disposition and experience with an extensive range of horses, she specialises in youngsters and difficult horses. Using listening to the horse in all aspects of her work, she is able to treat those that are misundertood with respect.

A little bit about me

Hi there, I am Alanna Watt, owner of Watt Equine. I have been lucky enough to travel the UK and overseas for various equine related reasons with a variety of professionals. I have studied and helped many world class equines in all aspects of the Equestrian Industry for over ten years including polo, hunting, racing, showjumping, cross country, riding school, trekking, dressage, and starting, teaching and re-training of all ages, sex and discipline. The language of the horse has always been something I have delved deep into as my passion is to help the horse, to help the people understand the horse, for a better harmonious life for all.

I have encountered many challenging horses and tasks throughout my years and in 2019 I took on the task of completing the worlds longest horseback race on semi wild horses - The Mongol Derby. This gave me a further understanding of the horses true optimum well being and natural behaviours. I have achieved various equine related diplomas and I am now on the path to completing a Level 5 Equine Podiatry Diploma, I have been trimming horses for non-profit for a quite a few years now but the Equine Podiatry provides extensive knowledge that I wouldn't otherwise have.

I have met a vast amount of horses that are deemed dangerous and unrideable, one being my own Thoroughbred and without fight or distress, these horses have gone on to win races, competitions or to be riding school horses. I strongly believe love, patience and listening are the key factors for successful training, we are all on a journey, we all need time.

If you would like to know more about me and my experience, please feel free to send a message.
